The council manages a small number of grazing and mowing sites across the district. Opportunities are limited and sites do not become available every year. Where land does become available, we will usually only offer sites that are a reasonable distance from the applicant's home.
Grazing licences normally run from the beginning of April to the end of November, and mowing licences from April to the end of September. We do not permit the overwintering of livestock in order to protect the condition of the land. No buildings, shelters or other structures are permitted, and licensees are responsible for ensuring fencing is stock-proof and that adequate water is provided.
Due to the limited number of sites and the high level of interest, we are only able to offer licences when suitable land becomes available. Being registered as an interested party does not guarantee that a site will be offered.
The best time to register your interest is between November and the end of January. Where sites are available, details of grazing and mowing licences will be issued during February and March each year, and applicants will be invited to submit an offer form. Applicants will normally be notified of the outcome by the end of March. Requests received outside this period will not be considered.
If you are aware of an area of land that is not currently being used and may have potential for grazing, please let us know so that we can investigate whether it may be suitable for future use.
