Current and upcoming improvement schemes

Some major schemes currently underway or moving into delivery:

• Leeds City Rail Station - work to create a world-class gateway to the city and significantly improve one of the busiest stations in the north of England is underway, due to complete in spring 2026
• Leeds City Square - it has been a long-held ambition to remove through-traffic from City Square and make it a people first environment. This is now the reality and the project is complete
• Armley Gyratory - improvements to one of Leeds' busiest roundabouts to help with increased capacity and diverting through traffic out of City Square. The final phase to replace 3 footbridges completed in summer 2025
• Leeds City Centre cycling schemes – 7km of cycle lanes to be delivered, making it easier and safer to cycle in the city centre
• Horsforth to Pudsey (A6120) Outer Ring Road - highways improvements for accessible walking, wheeling and cycling, with new 50mph speed restrictions and changes to junctions for safety for all road users

Plan your journey

Planning your journey in advance could help to reduce your time spent in traffic. You should:

• plan your route and allow extra time when travelling
• avoid making unnecessary short car journeys
• avoid the busiest routes and times of day, such as the school run
• walk or cycle to your destination
• try renting the LNER Beryl Bikes (fully electric) for short journeys
• use public transport instead
• make use of park and ride schemes, such as Elland Road, Temple Green or Stourton
