Communal area problems

Communal areas are parts of a house, block of flats, street or estate which tenants have a right to use in common with other tenants. The council is responsible for the maintenance of these areas.

Communal areas include:

  • communal hallways
  • shared stairways and access paths
  • shared gardens or yards, usually around flats and some bungalows

If you notice any problems, please report them to us as soon as possible. Problems may include:

  • belongings or rubbish left in hallways or on stairwells
  • broken lighting
  • overgrown shared gardens
