Black bin

What waste can I put in my black bin?

Your black bin is for general household waste only. Please try to recycle as much as you can.  More information can be found in the A to Z of reusing, recycling and waste disposal.

What items must not be put in your black bin?

Please do not put items in your bin that are hazardous, too large or heavy, for example:

  • Gas bottles
  • Motor vehicle parts
  • Bricks/rubble
  • Soil or large branches
  • Commercial waste;
  • Hazardous waste such as batteries, low energy light bulbs or paint;
  • Syringes or needles

Your bin may not be collected if it contains any of these items.

Please refer to the A to Z of reusing, recycling and waste disposal  for what to do with your waste and recycling items.

Your household waste must be contained within your bin with the lid closed. If you leave excess waste on top of, or near your black bin, we will not collect it.

With good housekeeping, your bins should remain reasonably clean. There are also independent companies that can provide a bin cleaning service for you.

We do not take all of the waste Leeds residents put in their black bins and bags to landfill any more.

Some of the waste goes to new recycling plants that can recover materials from your black bin waste like paper, cardboard, plastics and wood. If it is not good enough to use to make new products it can also be made into a fuel which is used in power stations.
