Reading groups

Find out about setting up and joining reading groups.

Reading groups are great places to meet other people. Our libraries have friendly and informal groups where new members are always welcome.

We are sometimes able to arrange for authors to visit groups to talk about their work. We also keep members up to date about book news and author events.

How to set up a group

  1. Pick a name for your group and register with your local library to become an affiliated group.
  2. Find a place to meet - some libraries have meeting rooms to hire for a small fee.
  3. Set some rules at the first meeting. If you're using library books, make sure all members are aware that any loss and damage are chargeable. Library books need to be returned on time.
  4. Decide what type of discussion you wish to have, such as an in-depth discussion or just an exchange of views.
  5. It's a good idea to choose a book that’s readily available - our libraries have collections for readers groups.

You can also register your group on the Reading Groups for Everyone external link site as well as our libraries.

Leeds Reads blog external link may help give your group some inspiration in choosing a new book.
