The reasons we use your data
The council's Highways and Transportation service are using a sensor system which is designed to allow traffic signal optimisation based on minimising person delay, as opposed to the conventional method of minimising vehicle delay.
To achieve this, the system needs to be capable of recognising different types of road user and tracking their progress through a junction. This is enabled via the use of camera sensors that capture an image and then immediately process it to collect anonymised road user data (For example: a car, van, HGV, cyclist, pedestrian).
The captured image is destroyed as soon as the image processing has taken place (after less than one second). Further information on these sensors, including a video demonstration of how this technology works is available on

Why we are allowed to use your data
The council has a public task function as a Highways Authority to maintain Leeds' road system and to ensure that traffic moves optimally.
Who we can share your data with
Personal data captured by the camera sensors is not shared with any third party and is destroyed in less than one second.
When computers make any decisions about you
No decisions will be made regarding individuals by these camera sensors. The sensors are designed to analyse traffic patterns as a whole and not an individual's particular journey.
When your data gets sent to other countries
No data is transferred outside of the UK.
