  • you'll be on a joint tenancy

What you'll need to pay

Moving from one Leeds address to another

Your old property

You’ll get a closing bill for the address you’re moving out of. This will cover the period until:

  • you sold your property (if you owned it)
  • your tenancy ended (if you were renting)

You might have to pay council tax on two properties for a short period if there is a crossover in the dates you rent the properties.

If you still own your old property and you are leaving it empty, you’ll still need to pay council tax on it until someone moves in or you sell it.

If you've overpaid for your old address, we will usually use the credit to reduce what you owe for your new address.

Your new property

You’ll need to pay council tax on your new property from:

  • your completion date (if you own the property)
  • the date your tenancy starts (if you’re renting)
Check the council tax band for your new address.

Moving into Leeds

We charge you from:

  • your completion date (if you own the property)
  • the date your tenancy starts (if you’re renting)

Remember to tell your previous council that you’ve moved.

Check the council tax band for your new address.

Moving out of Leeds

We will charge you up to:

  • the date the sale completes on your property (if you owned it)
  • the date your tenancy ends (if you were renting)

Your new council will charge you from the day you move into their area. Remember to tell them you have moved in so they can bill you at your new address.

If you have overpaid, we will issue a refund when we close your account.
