Supported living for older people

Supported living can help people who do not want to live in a care home but are finding it difficult to stay in their own home.

Types of housing

There are 2 types of supported housing available including:

  • Extra Care housing
  • Retirement LIFE housing

If you're not ready to move into supported housing, you can find other support to help you live independently in your own home.

Extra care housing

Extra care housing developments offer day and night care to older people and can be close to:

  • shops
  • health services such as doctors surgery
  • leisure facilities including gyms and libraries
  • public transport

Benefits

Benefits of living in extra care housing include:  

  • renting your own flat with your own front door
  • meeting other people
  • couples with different care needs can still live together
  • being able to keep your independence and choosing how you want to be cared for as you grow older

Retirement LIFE housing

People over the age of 60 can apply for retirement LIFE housing for extra support. Some homes are also available to people under the age of 60 who have a recommendation for retirement LIFE.

Benefits

A support assistant is available to support residents between Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm and you will:

  • rent a flat or bungalow with your own front door
  • have access to shared gardens, laundry rooms and sitting rooms
  • be able to take part in activities such as craft clubs and coffee mornings
  • have the option to get a help alarm linked to a response service for an extra charge

Locations

There are four supported retirement LIFE developments in Belle Isle for older people over the age of 60. 

These are run by the Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation external link.

The housing schemes have two full time support assistants to support residents between 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

  2. Ask for a medical assessment to change your priority to extra and get housing advice on the type of accommodation you need
  3. Make a bid for retirement LIFE houses if they're available
  4. When a property becomes available that you’ve bid for, further checks may be done to see if it’s suitable for you
  5. The property is offered to you if it meets your needs
