Social Work Jobs

The Children’s Social Work Service is led by Saleem Tariq, Chief Officer, Children's Social Work Service. Sal chose to be photographed alongside the 16ft bronze sculpture of Nelson Mandela’s hands, created by Leeds born sculptor Kenneth Armitage.

Saleem began his social work career as a residential social worker with looked after children and young people. He has also worked with children with disabilities in a short breaks home and with adults with learning disabilities living in the community. Saleem spent time working in the private sector in London before moving to Leeds in 1992 to undertake the Diploma in Social Work. Having qualified in 1994 he worked as a social worker and then a manager at all levels in the service until his appointment to his current post in December 2011.

Below Saleem explains about our approach to recruitment and retention and about opportunities we are recruiting to.

As part of our succession plan for the service we have recently made significant investment in the recruitment and training of Newly Qualified Social Workers. We are of course extremely committed to strengthening our core social work teams by recruiting and developing experienced staff.

We offer a generous financial package for Social Work colleagues which includes a relocation grant of up to £8,000, a maximum of thirty three days annual leave, and the opportunity to join the West Yorkshire Pension Scheme. Colleagues can also take advantage of various benefits including childcare vouchers, a bike to work scheme and high street discount vouchers.  More information can be found under the Documents section on this page.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We promote diversity and want a workforce that reflects the population of Leeds. Prior to the interview we will request your references. Failure to obtain both references will result in your interview being withdrawn.

Social Work posts are subject to an Enhanced Level Check with the Criminal Records Bureau. Application is also subject to you being registered with the General Social Care Council.
