Young carers

A young carer is a carer who is aged under 18 who looks after a parent, sibling or grand-parent who may have a disability, serious illness, a mental health issue or an alcohol, drug or substance problem.

At times, caring for someone can be quite demanding and mean that there is less time for hobbies, interests, friends, part-time work or school work. As a young carer you may be taking on extra household chores, sorting out medications, helping someone to wash, or comforting someone, to name but a few tasks.

If you care for someone, you may feel like you would like to talk to someone or ask for help if you need it. As a young carer you can face serious caring responsibilities and in Leeds we have a service run by specialist workers that can support you and give advice.
