What is the Single Person Discount review?
Over 125,000 Council Tax payers in Leeds currently receive a 25 per cent Single Person Discount on their Council Tax.
Over the next few weeks, we will be carrying out checks to make sure that these discounts are still required.
These checks form part of the council’s measures to make sure that Council Tax bills are accurate and that our records are up to date.
Capita Local Government Services based in Bromley, Kent, have been appointed to carry out a comprehensive review. Capita will work with a leading credit reference agency using up-to-the-minute, data-matching technology and other sources of information to identify where people are claiming discounts that they may not be entitled to.
Where it is identified that a Single Person Discount no longer applies, the Council Tax payer will be required to pay the money back.
We are keen however to ensure that genuine single occupancy residents continue to receive their single person discount entitlement. If you live alone therefore, and are claiming single person discount, there is nothing to worry about.
