Determined admissions arrangements

Admissions policies and fair access protocol

We are the admissions authority for all grant maintained schools in Leeds.

Our admissions policies are available to download in the related documents section. Some schools including voluntary aided, free schools, academies and trusts are their own admissions authorities and they have their own individual admissions policies. You can find these on the individual school's websites or by searching for the relevant school using Find a school.

Admission policies must be published by 15 March each year for the admission in September the following year. If you have any concerns and wish to make any objection you must do so by the 15 May by email to osa.team@osa.gsi.gov.uk or by post to:

Office of the Schools Adjudicator
Mowden Hall
Staindrop Road
Darlington

If you have a child with special educational needs and disability and would like information about them starting secondary school or appealing for a school place please contact the SEND Information Advice Service (formerly know as the Parent Partnership Service) on 0113 395 1200. The service is impartial, confidential, free and accessible.

Fair Access Protocol

Each local authority must have a Fair Access Protocol (PDF, 175KB), agreed with the majority of schools in its area. The protocol applies to children moving school and not to those starting primary or secondary school for the first time in September.

Its aim is to make sure the most vulnerable children are offered a place at a suitable school as quickly as possible, and that no school, including those with places, is asked to take a disproportionate number of vulnerable children.

Co-ordinated Admissions

The coordinated admissions scheme is a time table for communications about school admissions between schools, local authorities and admissions authorities.

The Primary in year co-ordination scheme, Secondary in year co-ordination scheme and Fair Access Protocols are all available in the related documents section. You can view the 2016 Adjudicator report on the GOV.UK website.

Use of False Addresses

It is important that the admissions system is fair for everybody. Nobody should be allowed to cheat by using a friend or relative’s address, or by putting an address you are not living at near to a popular school. Each year a small number of parents try to get a popular school place this way, taking a place that should have been given to another child.

The admissions team investigates all instances where a parent is thought to have used a false address in order to gain admission to a school.

If you think a family are using an address they do not live at for the purposes of school admissions, please inform the admissions team by email or in writing using the Contact us section. The information we use is always treated confidentially.

Any school offer made on the basis of a fraudulent or intentionally misleading application which effectively denied a place to a child with a stronger claim will be withdrawn.
