School and group visits

My favourite part was when we saw the real Egyptian mummy”, KS2 pupil

Have you ever held something that is thousands of years old? Imagine what it’s seen. Who has it travelled with? How did it get to Leeds?

Leeds City Museum is full of amazing objects either made in Leeds or brought here from far-flung parts of the globe. Time travel from the creation of the landscape to modern day in the Leeds Story Gallery. Come face-to-face with a 3,000-year-old mummy! Explore the impact humans have on the global climate through the Life on Earth Gallery, which is full of animals affected in some way by us or the environment around them.

If you are thinking about organising a visit for your group or school, then we have workshops, activities, self-led activities and information to help you plan a visit!

Primary Programme:
The museum collections work well for EYFS, KS1 and KS2, supporting topics from endangered animals to ancient worlds and the chronology of local Leeds life. We focus on hands-on learning, so, within the Egyptians at the Museum workshop, pupils investigate ancient Egyptians objects, become scientific embalmers as they prepare Suny (our child-friendly replica mummy) for the afterlife and develop speaking and listening skills in group work.

Secondary Programme:
Our KS3 and KS4 programmes focus on local history and its relevance to national and global politics. We use Leeds suffragette Leonora Cohen as a case study. We also do project-based work with secondary schools, and are open to ideas about using our objects and displays to support your curriculum learning.

What do teachers say about us?

“Seeing things outside of the class and hands on activities makes learning more meaningful!’, KS2 teacher after an Egyptians workshop.

“By far the best support I have ever had organising a trip!”, KS2 teacher after an Amazing Animals workshop.
