One Day, Something Happens: Paintings of People

A Hayward Touring & Arts Council Collection exhibition, curated by Jennifer Higgie

6 March – 24 May 2015

Leeds Art Gallery opens a new Arts Council Collection touring exhibition exploring paintings of the figure, curated by Jennifer Higgie, writer and co-editor of frieze.

‘One Day, Something Happens: Paintings of People’ looks at the everyday theatricality of the body and includes a selection of 20th century paintings by acclaimed artists such as Walter Sickert, Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Richard Hamilton. Higgie has also drawn on the Arts Council Collection’s recent acquisitions, with paintings by artists; Michael Fullerton, Rose Wylie and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye; these will be displayed alongside works from the fine art collection of Leeds Museums and Galleries, selected by Jennifer Higgie.

The boundaries of painting’s qualities will be explored with artists such as Enrico David, David Noonan and Renee So through tapestry, silkscreen printing and sculpture while placing the body centre-stage.

This exhibition opens at Leeds Art Gallery and will then tour to Nottingham, Drogheda, Southport and Eastbourne. You can purchase the accompanying exhibition catalogue to the UK touring show in the Gallery Shop situated on the lower ground floor.
