Food hygiene rating scheme

food hygiene rating logo

If you serve or supply food direct to the public, you may be covered by the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This means that when your business is inspected, you will be given a hygiene rating from '0' at the bottom to '5' at the top, based on the hygiene standards found at the time. Further information on the food hygiene rating scheme can be found in the documents section of this page.

You will be given a sticker/certificate with your rating. You can put these on display to show your customers how good your hygiene standards are.

If you are still not satisfied and want to proceed with an appeal this must be done in writing. Please complete the standard form which can be found in the documents section on this page

Your appeal must be in writing and submitted within 21 days from the date of your inspection.

The cost for each revisit is £215. Before applying you must ensure that all the improvements in your inspection report have been carried out as your rating can go up or down depending on what we find during the revisit.

Once we have received your completed form and reviewed it to ensure it shows improvements have been made, a member of our team will contact you to take your payment over the telephone. The details will then be passed to an officer who will revisit within approximately 3 months. Once the revisit has been carried out, the officer will give you a new rating based on the food hygiene standards they find at the time of this visit.

There are no limits to how many revisits you can have so if you do not achieve the maximum rating of 5 first time you could consider re-applying when you have carried out further improvements. However you will be charged £215 for each subsequent visit.

Further information on appeals, rights of reply, and revisits can be found in the FHRS Business Safeguards Explained document produced by the Food Standards Agency.

This is different from an appeal. This allows the owner or manager to tell potential customers how the business has improved hygiene, or to say if there were unusual circumstances at the time of the inspection. A business’s right to reply will be published online by the local authority with the business’s hygiene rating.
