History

Dominated by oak, ash and hazel species with lime, elder and alder. Some sycamore, chestnut and birch also present with ground covering of Rhododendron recently cleared to assist regeneration. Home of the spectacular Speckled Wood butterfly and 3 species woodpeckers. This is one of the best areas to view the wide range of fungi present.

The area is named after Lady Hertford who inherited Temple Newsam in 1807.

The extensive network of paths gives access to mainly walkers, but the bridleway adjacent allow some access to horse riders and cyclists, At the west end there are earthworks associated with 18th century coal mining and the wood is named in the Ordinance Survey map of 1850.


Access

From Bullerthorpe Lane via East Avenue or from car parks on the estate crossing Colton Bridlepath near the Little Temple
