Temple Newsam has about 30 distinct Woods covering a total area of 120 Hectares (264 acres). Many date back almost 300 years. Management by site staff, the Forest of Leeds project and volunteers ensures that the woodlands will survive into the future. Tree felling and regeneration work creates open sunny areas and clear parks. Retaining old grappled trees provides an ideal habitat for woodpeckers, roosting bats and a multitude of insects and fungus. The sheer variety of species and seasonal colour change in foliage provides a magnificent carpet of woodland around the more formal buildings and gardens.
