Walking & Running
Many people these days just walk to and from the car or bus stop. The great outdoors is full of mystery and mud,
but real enjoyment can be found walking the miles of official and permissive paths in the lovely rural setting
that is Temple Newsam Estate. Where better, so close to your own doorstep, to get the
"fourty-five-minutes-three-time-a-week" dose of life-extending free health-care we all need to stay fit?
The site has a wide variety of woodlands, parkland, lakeside, pond and stream side paths, paddocks with farm
animals and wildlife to look at and listen to. There is an amazing collage of colour in season from snowdrops,
crocuses and daffodils, to azaleas, rhododendron, bluebells, and colourful autumn leaves. Try the Rose Garden
walks for more formal displays of horticulture.
In 2004 Temple Newsam Estate hosted the English National Cross-Country Event with thousands of runners,
supporters and spectators. Apart from organised events like Charity and Fun Runs, many people use the tranquil
park for individual exercise, well away from vehicles. Runners and joggers of all ages and ability regularly
pound the estate roads and other tracks to maintain fitness and prolong an active life.
Another great way to get some exercise is to walk your dog on the Estate. Dogs are welcome at Temple Newsam,
but bring some doggy bags and clear up after your pooch. Remember that your dog must be under control at all
times. We have a lot of farm animals out in paddocks and fields that shouldn't be put at risk from a snap happy
dog. Always treat other visitors with respect and remember that some people with children may never have had a
pet and can be nervous or overwhelmed when approached by confident dogs off leads.
The Ramblers Association run an annual programme of walks and social activities and local groups regularly use
the Estate. See www.ramblers.org.uk.
If you need some help and advice getting into running, try joining a local running club. Rothwell Harriers are
