Orienteering

This is a sport where competitors navigate their way between control points marked on a specially drawn map and also marked on the course by a series of posts. Remote forests, moors, countryside or public parks such as Temple Newsam are favoured locations.

All you need is a sense of adventure, a pair of trainers or outdoor shoes, sports clothing that is reasonably weatherproof and a map and compass. It doesn't matter what age you are or how fit you may be. You can run, jog or walk at your own pace.

Orienteering is the perfect outdoor activity for schools. A local club, the "Airienteers", produces a map of the site showing the permanent course from the athletics track to Bullerthorpe Lane. Temple Newsam's Orienteering Course is mostly used in the winter and early spring when the vegetation is low.
