Although there must always have been stairs somewhere near here, the present Stone Staircase seems to date from Thomas Johnson's alterations of the 1790s. The elegant wrought-iron balustrade was moved from the main staircase during Mrs Meynell Ingram's alterations of the 1890s. There are a number of the same design to be seen in houses designed by James Wyatt.
