House Tour
Miss Scot's Room
The semi-derelict state of the room belonging to the governess of the five daughters of the last Lord Irwin,
Miss Scot's Room, provides a vivid picture of the archaeology of the house. The brickwork belongs to the Tudor
period, with a blocked in fireplace in what had been an outside wall in the 16th century and small doorways at
each end (one probably leading to a garderobe tower) with inset timber wall-plates for hanging tapestries. The
rendering is probably 17th century, and the panelling probably from the early 18th century. Various layers of
wallpapers can be seen pasted onto this, ending with William Morris' Acanthus pattern from the late 19th century.
