The Darnley Room
The panelled room at the south-west corner of Temple Newsam is traditionally known as the Darnley Room and is
popularly supposed to have been the room in which Lord Darnley (1545-1567), infamous husband of Mary Queen of
Scots, was born in 1545. However, in actuality it is part of Sir Arthur Ingram's additions made at least half
a cen-tury after Lord Darnley's death in 1567, and part of the Jacobean plaster frieze survives behind later
decoration.
The room was clearly an important one and by the late 17th century was hung with crimson silk damask. Three
wallpapers replaced this in turn, the last of which was a Stork wallpaper hung in time for the visit of the Duke
and Duchess of York in 1894. A facsimile of the Stork wallpaper can now been seen in the South Bedroom. This
was covered up by the present panelling and plasterwork - the latter based on Jacobean originals elsewhere in the
house - only two years later, in 1896. The room now contains a rich variety of furniture dating from the late
16th to the late 19th centuries.
