House Tour
South Bedroom
The South Bedroom has a modern copy of the famous Stork wallpaper put up here in 1868 for the royal visit of
the Prince of Wales. In 1996 the Louis XVI state bed also used on the occasion of the later Royal visit in
1894 was returned to Temple Newsam after its dispersal abroad was prevented by an Export Licence deferral. It
was made by Jean Baptiste Tilliard II and possibly given to Lady Hertford by her admirer the Prince Regent, or
alternatively by her son (another great collector of French furniture) Lord Yarmouth.
Earlier in the 19th century this room belonged to the third daughter of Frances Lady Irwin, Mrs Elizabeth
Meynell - and a full-length portrait of her sister, Lady Hertford hangs in this room. Other portraits of members
of the family from this date hang in these rooms - many returned to the house in recent years having been accepted
by the government in lieu of taxes.
