House Tour
South Passage
The second flight of the Oak Staircase leads to the upper floor of the south wing. In 1808 this part of the house
was called 'Right Wing Attic first floor', but as these rooms and the connecting South Passage were probably
created specifically for the daughters and grand-daughters of the last Viscount, the word attic clearly had a
different meaning then. Architecturally they are very plain and would originally have been enlivened by
decorative wallpapers, all of which seem to have been blue or green in colour.
On display in the south passage are more items by Thomas Chippendale on permanent loan to Temple Newsam from the
Chippendale Society.
