The Dark Room
The servant's room or Dark Room is one of two on this floor, so called because their only source of natural
light is from the internal windows giving on to the Gallery Passage. Both rooms would have been used by
maids or valets who needed to be close to the bedrooms or dressing rooms of their employers.
In the early Tudor house this room was part of a much larger and grander room that was later truncated.
Because of the room's lowly status the early 16th century ribbed ceiling and arched fireplace were never
replaced by anything more fashionable. It has been furnished with some of the contents of the Housekeeper's
Room at Raby Castle, County Durham, which were bought for Temple Newsam in 1994.
