House Tour
Gallery Passage
Climbing to the first floor of the west wing the stairs give on to the Gallery Passage, continuing the
'ceremonial route' towards the Picture Gallery, the grandest room in the house.
The decoration dates from C E Kempe's alterations, begun in 1889. The panelling and plasterwork conceal plain
Georgian detail, which in turn replaced early-Tudor decoration in the gothic style. The family's private lodgings
or apartments on the garden side were also entered from this passage. They generally consisted of a bedchamber
and dressing room with a servant's room adjoining - named 'Dark Room' because it received light only from the
passage.
