Mr Wood's Library
Until the late 18th century Mr Wood's Library was the site of the kitchens which were then transferred to the
north-east corner of the house. The room, finished after 1808, was probably used as a drawing room or
smoking room for the gentlemen of the family. Hung with a crimson ground wallpaper in the 1820s, in 1912
it was converted by the Hon Edward Wood into an early Georgian style library using the fashionable decorators
Lenygon's of Old Burlington Street, London. The original colour scheme of peacock green and gold was restored
in 1987 when the bookcases were also revealed. One of the most celebrated treasures of the house is to be found
here: the majestic library writing table made by Thomas Chippendale for Harewood House c 1770. Other pieces made
by this Yorkshire-born master on display in this room are on loan from the Chippendale Society.
