History - The House And Its Owners
Victorian and Edwardian Heyday 1841 - 1922

During the ownership of Hugo Charles Meynell Ingram (1841-1869), Temple Newsam was mainly used for house parties during the autumn shooting season as the principal Meynell property was at Hoar Cross in Staffordshire. Hugo Charles' son, Hugo Francis, married the Hon Emily Wood, daughter of the first Viscount Halifax, and after his premature death in 1871 she became the widowed chatelaine of Temple Newsam for thirty-three years.

Mrs Meynell Ingram became very attached to the house, especially towards the end of her life, and took great care in reviving much of its Tudor and Jacobean atmosphere. She rebuilt the Oak Staircase, installed a new chapel, and remodelled a number of rooms to enhance their historic character. On her death in 1904, having no children of her own, she left the property to her nephew the Hon Edward Wood, the future Earl of Halifax, Foreign Secretary and Ambassador to Washington. In 1922 Lord Halifax sold the house and park to Leeds Corporation and many of the contents were dispersed.
