Gold Chocolate Cup

The cup is the only known example of its kind to be made from solid gold. It was made in c1690 by the goldsmith Ralph Leake, well known for his sophisticated style and influential clients. While it is being used the cover, with its three finials, can be removed and turned upside-down to make a neat saucer.

Although the shape of the cup is based on contemporary red stoneware forms associated with the Elers brothers, its surface is chased with remarkable scenes of chinoiserie, with chinamen, exotic birds and flowers, reflecting the great interest in all things Oriental at this time.
