Seascape with Shipwreck by Antonio Marini (1668-1725)
This dramatic painting is one of a group, originally numbering about 40, which arrived at Temple Newsam
in 1709 having been commissioned by Edward, fourth Viscount Irwin while on his Grand Tour of Europe 1704 - 1707.
The majority depict stormy landscapes, seascapes and battle scenes. Lord Irwin's taste for this kind of
painting was most unusual as most English grand tourists were buying highly finished classical landscapes in the
style of Claude or Poussin, or history paintings in the grand manner.
The artist had been forgotten since the middle of the 18th century and has only just been identified as the highly
esteem Paduan, Antonio Marini. This identification is based on a recently discovered signature on a closely
related landscape in the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo. Marini also included his own Self Portrait in this
consignment.
