The furniture collection of Temple Newsam is one of the finest in the country.
The main strength of the collection is elite English 18th century furniture, much of it commissioned for great
houses now destroyed. Highlights include The Murray Cabinet by John Channon and Thomas Chippendale's Library
Writing Table commissioned for Harwood House. The museum also harbours many excellent Tudor and Stuart pieces,
including important holdings of regional furniture. Although the English content of the collection is dominant,
it contains a notable range of Dutch, French, Germanic and Italian work, plus a repertoire of Oriental furniture.
In addition, Temple Newsam is home to a collection of works by Yorkshire master craftsman Thomas Chippendale, on
loan from The Chippendale Society.
A three volume illustrated survey of the furniture is available.
