Temple Newsam is home to a comprehensive collection of English pottery containing pieces dating from the 1650s to the 1850s. The development of pottery can be followed, largely in collections given and bequeathed in the 1940s by the Yorkshire Collector Thomas Hollings, from the slipware of Thomas Toft and others, to the refined tablewares of factories such as Wedgwood or the Leeds Pottery. The main emphasis is on the English creamwares made between 1760 and 1820, a direct result of the special interests of the Yorkshire collectors who donated their collections to the museum. The ceramic collection also contains examples of European and Oriental porcelain.
