Livestock - Sheep

Portland

A small, thrifty sheep, which today is the most typical representative of the old
tan–faced sheep that were once the dominant breed in Great Britain. Portlands are a heathland breed from the Dorset area.

Both sexes are horned with tan coloured, wool free faces and legs, able to produce close, fine wool and an exceptionally high quality, flavoured meat. The noses and feet are dark, whilst the horns are light, often with a black line in one or both, being heavily spiralled in the rams and curved in the ewes.

The lambing percentage is generally only 100%, but the ewes have the ability to lamb out of season.

Average mature ewes weigh 38-40kg.
