Tamworth
Originally a red and black Staffordshire pig that was closely related to the original Berkshire. It has descended
from the imported Red Barbadon or Axford. By the 1820s it had been bred completely deep red or mahogany - the
skin as well as the coat.
A hardy, agile breed that will adapt to most conditions, it makes an excellent outdoor pig and is resistant to sunburn. They are active and
talkative, the sows make excellent mothers, being milky and protective. Primarily a bacon pig but they will produce both good quality pork
and bacon.
A long, narrow pig with upright ears, a long snout and golden-red in colour.
