British Saddleback
Pigs described as 'sheeted' or 'saddleback' are black with a white band over the shoulders and extending down
to include the forelegs. The British Saddleback resulted from combining the Essex and Wessex breeds. The
Essex was a finer, lighter pig with four white socks, a white tail tassel and a broader saddle while the
Wessex only had white socks at the front.
It is a hardy, dual-purpose breed that is well suited to outdoor conditions. The sows are docile and
long-lived, producing plenty of milk and able to rear large litters. Good meat producers used for producing pork,
bacon, sucklers or heavy pigs.
Large pigs with lop ears and a white belt that can vary in width around an otherwise black pig.
