Berkshire
The original Berkshire lacked uniformity, it could be almost any colour with either pricked or lop ears, but
was gradually improved to become the favourite pig of the 19th Century, widely used to improve other breeds
and to produce crossbreds for meat.
Apparently this pig has a good sense of humour! The sows make excellent, easy going mothers and provide plenty
of milk for the litter, which averages nine piglets. An early maturing pig producing fine lean meat which dresses
out white even though it is black-haired.
A long pig with short legs, dished face and large upright ears. A black pig with white on its face, feet and
tip of the tail and plenty of long, fine hair.
