Introduction
A large estate needed many dedicated craftsmen to maintain it to the standards required by the owner, but also to
protect it.
At the turn of the 19th Century there was a Bailiff and a Clerk of Works, who had almost 30 men working under
them, including joiners, bricklayers and someone in charge of 'waterworks', in addition there were four
gamekeepers and many gardeners.
Temple Newsam was once a royal hunting park and we are lucky enough to still have deer roaming wild in the
woods, there was also a pheasantry in Avenue Woods where birds were raised for the shoot. In order to keep the
game for 'His Lordship' and his guests many ugly devices were set to catch any would be thieves.
