Beef Shorthorn
Beef Shorthorn are red, red and white, white or roan in colour. They can be either horned or polled.
They are a docile breed that is highly adaptable, economical and productive. Mature bulls weigh around 800kg,
cows about 500kg.
The Shorthorn is the oldest recorded breed of cattle in the UK, Coates's Herd Book began registering cattle in
1822. Original Shorthorns were a dual-purpose breed, but over time have been selectively bred for either beef
or milk, with the herd book dividing into the Beef Shorthorn Society and the Dairy Shorthorn Society.
Up until the 1950s they were the most numerous of all cattle in the British Isles, and have contributed to the improvement of many other breeds.
