The great thing about Temple Newsam is that it's got something for everyone ... whether you are interested in posh
houses, you like nature or you just want to walk your dog!
This page is divided into activities according to how old you are. If you are really young, you will have to
persuade your parents to come with you. If you are older, you can come by yourself or with some friends. You
need to be over fifteen to get in the Farm without an adult to accompany you. If you are older still, you could
organise your own trip to Temple Newsam and take the responsibility for looking after younger family members or
friends.
For Families with Very Young Children...
Many footpaths are well surfaced and flat enough for buggies or pushchairs. There are lots
of benches to sit on if you want to take a rest.
We have short and longer trails to follow, each with their own theme and a growing list of self-guiding
interpretive leaflets available to buy at the Visitor Centre.
There are plenty of places to spread a blanket and have a picnic or safely kick a football about.
For Families with Older Children...
If you just love the wide open spaces and that feeling of freedom that being outdoors gives you, why not wrap the
kids up warmly and take them for a walk or a bike ride in the park or in the woodlands?
Bring a pair of binoculars and keep your eyes open for some of our many species of
birds and wild animals.
If you get your children used to walking or cycling in the
countryside when they are young, they will appreciate it all their lives.
If you get hungry or thirsty, the Temple Newsam Tea Rooms offer a wide variety of snacks, meals and drinks.
Temple Newsam House is brilliant to walk round. There's lots to see and do.
Home Farm at Temple Newsam is very popular with families with children
of all ages.
You can see a wide range of rare breeds of
animals. Here at Temple Newsam a pig is not just a pig... it could be a Middle White, a Tamworth, a Large Black,
or a Saddleback. They are all approachable and you get a free bag of grassnuts to feed them with. We've also got
horses, cows, bulls, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and geese. At different times of the year there are guided
tours of the farm and farm-based activities, especially for families with children, at weekends and holiday times.
There is an admission charge for adults and children, but under 5s go free.
Daily Farm Activities include bottle–feeding lambs and calves and feeding the animals. Some of this work is
dependent on the season. Staff may be able to talk about the work they do as they go about their jobs.
