Accessibility - the ease with which people can travel to a site by different modes of transport. Active Solar Gain - the use of technologies to convert solar energy into usable heat / power. Biodiversity - the diversity of living things in a given area. Combined Heat and Power - the distribution of waste heat from electricity generation to provide space heating. District Heating - the distribution of hot water to provide space heating which is then returned for reheating. Earth Sheltered Buildings - buildings set into the earth providing high levels of heat and noise insulation. Embodied Energy - the total energy used in the extraction, processing, manufacture and transportation of a material. Extensive Green Roofs - vegetated roofs requiring little or no maintenance. Filter Strips - areas of vegetation designed to absorb surface water run-off. Geotextiles - layers of fabric used to prevent soil erosion and assist vegetation establishment. Green Engineering - using an ecological approach to development based on natural processes and resources. Greenhouse Effect - changes to the Earths climate caused by increased emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Grey Water - rain water and waste water from washing. Infiltration - the absorption of water into the ground to replenish groundwater reserves. Lifecycle Approach - looking at the overall impact of a development from sourcing of materials to the end of the buildings lifespan. Microclimate - localised climatic conditions within a site or part of a site. Ozone Depletion - damage to the Earths protective ozone layer caused by the release of CFCs, HCFCs and other ozone depleting gases. Passive Solar Gain - utilising solar energy for space heating through the design of a building. Photovoltaics - the use of special cells which generate electricity using solar energy. Substructure - any part of a building which lies below ground level. Swales - landscape depressions designed to store and absorb surface water. Thermal Buffering - the use of structures such as conservatories, garages and air lobbies to reduce heat loss from a building. Thermal Capacity - the ability of a material to retain heat. White Water - potable water.
