Glossary


Accessibility - the ease with which people can travel to a site by different modes of transport.

Active Solar Gain - the use of technologies to convert solar energy into usable heat / power.

Biodiversity - the diversity of living things in a given area.

Combined Heat and Power - the distribution of waste heat from electricity generation to provide space heating.

District Heating - the distribution of hot water to provide space heating which is then returned for reheating.

Earth Sheltered Buildings - buildings set into the earth providing high levels of heat and noise insulation.

Embodied Energy - the total energy used in the extraction, processing, manufacture and transportation of a material.

Extensive Green Roofs - vegetated roofs requiring little or no maintenance.

Filter Strips - areas of vegetation designed to absorb surface water run-off.

Geotextiles - layers of fabric used to prevent soil erosion and assist vegetation establishment.

Green Engineering - using an ecological approach to development based on natural processes and resources.

Greenhouse Effect - changes to the Earth’s climate caused by increased emissions of carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse’ gases.

Grey Water - rain water and waste water from washing.

Infiltration - the absorption of water into the ground to replenish groundwater reserves.

Lifecycle Approach - looking at the overall impact of a development from sourcing of materials to the end of the building’s lifespan.

Microclimate - localised climatic conditions within a site or part of a site.

Ozone Depletion - damage to the Earth’s protective ozone layer caused by the release of CFC’s, HCFC’s and other ozone depleting gases.

Passive Solar Gain - utilising solar energy for space heating through the design of a building.

Photovoltaics - the use of special cells which generate electricity using solar energy.

Substructure - any part of a building which lies below ground level.

Swales - landscape depressions designed to store and absorb surface water.

Thermal Buffering - the use of structures such as conservatories, garages and air lobbies to reduce heat loss from a building.

Thermal Capacity - the ability of a material to retain heat.

White Water - potable water.
