Tennis lessons at John Charles Centre for Sport

Our tennis lessons cater for children and adults from 3 years upwards and for all levels and abilities. Lessons are delivered by LTA qualified coaches and individual tuition is also available.

Junior coaching is for players of any ability from 3 years+ and run on a school term basis. Classes are structured according to age with the youngest children starting out with foam balls and larger rackets, smaller courts and lower nets.

  • Mini red tennis – 3-6 year olds
  • Mini red tennis – 4-8 year olds
  • Mini orange tennis – 8-9 year olds
  • Mini green tennis – 9-10 year olds
  • Full ball squads – 10 years +

Parents, we have a comfortable social area for you to relax, chat and watch your children whilst their lessons are in progress.  Light refreshments are available.

Junior coaching sessions are also available at Rothwell leisure centre and Scott Hall leisure centre.

Adult coaching is available for individual or groups of players of any ability from beginners to advanced and tactical coaching for experienced players.

Disability tennis sessions are suitable for all ages and any disability. Tennis wheelchairs and a coach proficient in sign language are available.

Performance tennis
Performance tennis squads take place for promising young players aged between 5 and 18 years old. Entry is by invitation or by assessment from one of the performance tennis coaches. The performance tennis squads feed into the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) regional squads.  There are also opportunities for players aged 16 years + to attend the Carnegie AASE (Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) or coach education programmes.

Tennis rackets and balls are available to hire or purchase from reception.

Disabled facilities include: reserved parking for disabled drivers, level entrance, automatic entrance doors, induction loop, accessible changing and shower facilities, tactile signage, tennis wheelchairs (for hire), level access to courts (ramped), access to viewing gallery.​
