Age Concern England is an organisation working with and for older people to provide vital local services as well as influencing public opinion and government.

Better Government for Older People (BGOP) is a UK-wide partnership which includes the Older People's Advisory Group (OPAG) and BGOP's subscribers, key partners and strategic alliances. BGOP exists to share information and learning, develop partnerships, and influence policy and practice. BGOP has recently carried out a UK-wide study on local government strategies, plans and priorities in the field of Older People from Black and Ethnic Minority Groups.

The Policy Research Institute on Ageing and Ethnicity (PRIAE) is an NGO dedicated to improving the quality of life of black and minority ethnic (BME) elders in the UK and in Europe. PRIAE specialises in Income; Health, Social Care and Housing; Quality of Life and Citizenship through Policy, Information, Research Service Developments, Training and Consultancy. It is more than a 'think tank, PRIAE created and manages the 'Minority Elderly Care' (MEC) project - the largest research project in the area in Europe, working in 10 European countries and funded under the EEC 5th Framework Research Programme.

Choices for Black Minority Ethnic Carers is a video produced by Leeds City Council Social Services Department, portraying the types of community based and statutory services available, that can and should be accessed by Carers and Service Users from Black Minority Ethnic communities. NATIONAL LINKS GERMANY

Aktioncourage is a non-profit organisation which is mainly financed by donations, membership-fees and project-specific funding. The organisation works in the field of combating racism and has recently developed an advice and information point (IKOM: Informations- und Kontaktstelle Migration) for the work with elders from black and ethnic minority groups. The aim is to inform the public about projects, events, literature on this special theme and to develop special training for people working with BME elders in social care. Aktioncourage also publishes a regular newsletter on culturally sensitive services for elders from ethnic minorities in German. If you would like to sign up please go to:

NATIONAL LINKS SWEDEN

Oliven (The Olive) was established in August 2002 as a meeting point for elderly immigrants in Sweden. As well as being a meeting place, the centre provides information, activities and interpretation services for elderly immigrants, and a network for relatives. Oliven is run as a voluntary organisation with some funding from the Gunnared District Council:

In November 2004, The European Commission presented its first handbook on the integration of immigrants, Handbook on Integration for policy makers and practitioners. The handbook contains best practices and lessons learned from the twenty-five member states of the European Union in the following areas: introduction courses for newly arrived immigrants and recognised refugees, civic participation, and indicators.

The aim of the handbook is to promote co-operation at the European level on integration by facilitating the exchange of experience and information. It is targeted at policy-makers and practitioners at the local, regional, national and EU level.

The Bertelsmann Foundation has produced a CD ROM entitled Managing Integration: The European Union's Responsibilities Towards Immigrants. Free copies of this CD ROM can be obtained by contacting:
