Final report

One of the results of SEEM I was the production of an overall good practice report. It describes the groups and migration histories of BME elders in all four cities, their life circumstances and important socio-political and legal aspects. It draws together existing experiences in the field of personal social services for BME elders, identifies models of good practice, analyses the conclusions of the different local projects and gives the recommendations for further strategies for action on different political levels.

There are 2 versions of the report - the full report (100 pages) and a summary (23 pages). Both of these are available below.

Background reports

The new SEEM partners in phase II of the project, the Geron Foundation and Fundatia Matca from Bucharest (Romania) and the Province of East-Flanders based in Gent (Belgium) have recently produced a background report about the situation of BME elders in their countries. The reports outline the number and origin of BME elders on the basis of statistical data, describe the political and social circumstances in the relevant countries and give an overview of successful local projects with BME elders.

There is also a report available on the specific situation of the Rroma community, one of the largest minority ethnic groups in Romania which leads a nomadic life and is therefore particularly at risk of being discriminated against and socially excluded.

The visits focused for example on food projects and preparation with and for black and minority ethnic elders or how to develop the voluntary sector. The reports give an overview of what the elders learned from their visit and what examples of good practice they would like to transfer to their city.

A Guide to Good Practice in the EU - SEEM booklet and checklist

The SEEM project partners have produced a booklet entitled 'Services for Elders from Ethnic Minorities: A Guide to Good Practice in the EU'. This booklet lists examples of good practice, from across Europe, in the field of health and social care for minority ethnic elders. The booklet also contains a checklist designed to help local authorities and service providers to plan and deliver a more complete and meaningful set of services to these specific target groups.

The SEEM booklet and checklist can be viewed in PDF format by following the link below:
