Preparing for the Gaz de France Leeds Half Marathon 2008
Training plans for beginners and more experienced runners may be found on various websites including Runners World
Whether you are an experienced half marathon runner or this is your first half marathon, it is advisable to run some shorter races leading up to the Leeds Half. There are over 30 races in the Leeds area throughout the year. Most of these will be listed on the U K Results website.
If you are looking for advice about training or wanting to train with other runners, why not join a running club. There are over 20 clubs based in Leeds or who have training sessions in Leeds, all of whom will give you a friendly welcome. Go to the U K Athletics website and then enter 'Leeds' in the keywords box.
Volunteering opportunities
As this is one of the biggest sporting events in Leeds, there are many volunteer opportunities available. With 3800 runners in the half marathon, almost 1000 runners in the Corporate Challenge and 1000+ runners in the Family Fun Run, the need for volunteers is paramount in the successful running of this event.
Some of the volunteer opportunities are:
-
Drink Station Volunteers: Giving out drinks to runners as they pass the station.
-
Sponge Volunteers: Giving out sponges to the runners as they pass.
-
Directions Volunteers: Pointing the runners into the right direction.
-
Millennium Square Volunteers: Help handing out goodie bags, supporting the event staff, crowd control, Marathon set up and Marathon take down.
If you would be interested in helping out on the day we are always looking for volunteers. If you would like more information on how you could help or would like to be involved in this exciting event please contact Sean Kachmarski on 0113 3951445 or email: sean.Kachmarski@leeds.gov.uk Please be aware that this could involve an early start, some volunteers are required from 7.30 am.

Official Race Charity
We are very pleased to have Andrea’s Gift as our official charity. Andrea’s Gift was founded in 2003 and has raised over £500,000 to support people affected by brain tumours in Yorkshire, primarily those who have received treatment through the Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
Brain tumours are considered rare compared to other cancers, but the surgical and oncology teams in Leeds alone see over 600 adults and 25 children each year as newly diagnosed patients. Sadly, around 20% of patients are diagnosed with the most aggressive tumours and will die within 12 months. Frighteningly, due to a lack of research, brain tumours now kill more children than leukaemia.
You can download an Andrea's Gift sponsorship form in PDF format from the right hand side of this page.
