Biological hazard examples

Infections and disease are caused by certain types of micro-organisms that become hazardous to health when environmental conditions allow their populations to expand rapidly. Bacterial cultures thrive where there's poor hygeine, warm temperatures and moisture present. The pictures below were all taken at businesses in Leeds. They show just the sort of ideal conditions for micro-organisms to spread and grow to dangerous levels.

Fridge full of dead rats

Very mouldy walls

Legionnellae
Legionnaires disease is a serious and potentially fatal illness caused by Legionella bacteria. Legionellae are widespread and commonly found in natural water systems. People can become infected through breathing tiny droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria, so Legionellae can be very dangerous if they get into artificial water systems such as air-conditioning or hot and cold water services. Controlling bacteria in these systems requires constant monitoring and special water treatment methods.
