School waiting lists

Reception and Year 7 places starting in September 2017

If you are not happy with the place you have been offered you can put your child on a waiting list for a different school without going through the formal appeal process.

We advise you to still accept the place you have been offered. Accepting the place will not affect the outcome of an appeal or waiting list request.

A waiting list and appeal form will be attached to your offer letter. If you would like your child to be placed on a waiting list you should return this form as soon as possible. The deadlines are:

  • 14 March 2017 for secondary places
  • 28 April 2017 for primary places

For Community and Voluntary Controlled schools, Leeds City Council manages waiting lists. Any names from the waiting lists are matched with any vacancies we are told about in order of the priorities set out in the Leeds City Council Admissions Policy. Waiting lists will be held until 25 July 2017, i.e. the end of the academic year. Until then your child can be allocated a place from the waiting list at any time automatically, so if you leave them on the waiting list please make sure you are prepared to move their school immediately. Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools, Academies and Free Schools manage their own waiting lists but you still need to send your waiting list form to the Admissions Team who will notify the school of the application.

Please note that parents can add a child to a waiting list for a school that was not one of their original preferences.

Choosing a school outside the Leeds authority area

If you live in Leeds and wish to go on the waiting list for a school outside the Leeds authority area, and it was not one of your original preferences, you will need to make the application with the Leeds authority. If you did apply for the school as one of your original preferences you will need to make the application with the local authority where the school is.

Factors affecting your place on the waiting list

The priorities for waiting lists are the same as the priorities for allocation of school places. Some schools have their own priorities that differ.

School transfer waiting lists

If you apply for a school transfer and the school cannot offer you a place, you will automatically be placed on a waiting list for that school. Waiting lists will be held until the end of the academic year. If a place becomes available and you qualify under the admissions policy, the school will contact you.
