Welcome to Leeds! This is Sign WP02
Welcome to Leeds city centre. This sign is part of Walk it Leeds - a project aimed at making it easy to find your way around Leeds City Centre on foot.
Rich in culture and heritage, Leeds is a vibrant city with lots to discover and something for everyone to enjoy.
By day, take your pick of the excellent shopping in the city centre. Discover our charming traditional arcades with their thriving independent boutique shops and indulge yourself in the magnificent Victoria Quarter.
By night, Leeds really comes alive with its wide array of restaurants, bars, clubs and other entertainment. There is a broad range of cultural attractions, including renowned theatres, opera and ballet companies, with something to appeal to every palate.
You are at sign WP02 outside Leeds Train Station, next to one of Leeds’ most famous landmarks, the Queens Hotel. Opened in 1937, it was designed by William Curtiss Green and William Hamlyn, the same architects responsible for The Dorchester in London. The Queens was the first hotel in Britain to have en-suite bathrooms to every room. It was one of the last great railway hotels to be built and it’s spectacular Portland Stone frontage still graces City Square today.
This sign gives you clear, easy-to-read mapping of the local area. It shows you the main shopping areas in yellow, places to eat and drink in orange, and other places of interest in purple.
The map is known as ‘heads up’, which means the map is orientated to the direction you are looking at it, rather than having north at the top.
The sign is also solar powered, so the map should be backlit if it’s before 9pm and if it’s dark.
This sign was installed in February 2011 and the map was last updated in November 2011. If you spot any mistakes or damage, we’d be pleased to hear from you. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0113 2474685.
