Walkit Route CP116

Welcome to Walk it Leeds – this is Sign CP116

Walk it Leeds is a project aimed at making it easy for you to make your way around Leeds City Centre on foot.

This sign gives you clear, easy-to-read mapping of the local area. It shows you the main shopping areas in yellow, places to eat and drink in orange, and other places of interest in purple.

This sign was installed in October 2012 and the map was last updated in September 2012. If you spot any mistakes or damage, we’d be pleased to hear from you. Please email walkitleeds@leeds.gov.uk or call 0113 2474685.
You are at sign CP116 on Dark Neville Street, in what is locally known as ‘the dark arches’. Above you is Leeds Train Station, built over the River Aire in 1869. Leeds train station is actually the result of a merger between two previous train stations – New Station and Wellington Station – which took place in 1938. Today Leeds station is the second busiest outside of London, serving over 20 million passengers per year.
Further down Dark Neville Street to the left of this map is the dramatic entrance to Granary Wharf, where the River cascades noisily below you as it makes its way under the station. Granary Wharf itself is a mixed use development where the new south entrance of the train station will be built next year.
A sound and light art installation was added to Neville Street, the main road which runs to the right of this map, in 2009.
