Walkit Route A71

Welcome to Walkit Leeds. This is sign A71

Walk it Leeds is a project aimed at making it easy for you to make your way around Leeds City Centre on foot.

This sign gives you clear, easy-to-read mapping of the local area. It shows you the main shopping areas in yellow, places to eat and drink in orange, and other places of interest in purple.

The map is known as ‘heads up’, which means the map is orientated to the direction you are looking at it, rather than having north at the top.

The sign is also solar powered, so the map should be backlit if it’s before 9pm and if it’s dark.

This sign was installed in December 2011 and the map was last updated in November 2011. If you spot any mistakes or damage, we’d be pleased to hear from you. Please email walkitleeds@leeds.gov.uk or call 0113 2474685.

You are at sign A71on Briggate – Leeds’ main shopping street. The name Briggate derives from Bridge (Brig) Road (Gate) and the bridge in question is Leeds Bridge, where the world’s first moving pictures were filmed. Briggate is so wide because it was originally designed to hold a market, which it did for hundreds of years after the street was first laid out in 1207. For most of its history, Briggate was the main south-north thoroughfare through the city until it was fully pedestrianised in the late 1990s.
