Welcome to Walkit Leeds - This is sign A33
Walk it Leeds is a project aimed at making it easy for you to make your way around Leeds City Centre on foot.
This sign gives you clear, easy-to-read mapping of the local area. It shows you the main shopping areas in yellow, places to eat and drink in orange, and other places of interest in purple.
The map is known as ‘heads up’, which means the map is orientated to the direction you are looking at it, rather than having north at the top.
The sign is also solar powered, so the map should be backlit if it’s before 9pm and if it’s dark.
This sign was installed in December 2011 and the map was last updated in November 2011. If you spot any mistakes or damage, we’d be pleased to hear from you. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0113 2474685.
You are at sign A33 on Kirkgate, which is the oldest street in Leeds. Kirkgate means Church (Kirk) Street (Gate), and it leads to Leeds Parish Church. Kirkgate has a fascinating history, it was once home to a prison, a library, a vicarage and Leeds’ First White Cloth Hall. Leeds Historian Ralph Thoresby was born and raised in a house on Kirkgate, very close to the location of this sign.
